Welcome to the 2014 Jetlag & Mayhem Travel Awards. An awards ceremony made up entirely by me. Here we celebrate the travel year that was 2014…
After American Airlines twice cancelled my LAX-ABQ booking I decided it was time to move on and find a different airline. Enter Southwest, the world’s first Low Cost Carrier! Booking was easy, the price was great and the experience was excellent. I would definitely use them again.
Best Hotel Room
The Four Seasons Rancho Encantado in Santa Fe, New Mexico was magical. From the fireplace in the corner to the beautiful chocolates and best bath ever! I would love to return here one day, preferably without the kids.
Best Hotel Bathroom
Hands down, the Chen Sea Resort in Phu Quoc, Vietnam. You could have a party in there it’s so big! Wait.. I think we did actually have a party in there…
Best travel experience
Meeting a panda in Chengdu was pretty darn cool.
Best Travel Tip
Zpac packing cubes! They will revolutionise your packing and make the inside of your suitcase look so pretty.
Dish Of The Year
A sopapilla in New Mexico – a divine invention made of fried pastry (surely I had you at that) and stuffed with cheese, meat, chile, anything you want really…
Best Travel Website
Airbnb came up trumps again from an amazing trailer on a horse ranch (sounds weird, was good) to a two bedroom apartment which was far cheaper than a hotel room in Central London.
Travel Hack Of The Year
Saving up all our Asia Miles so that we could upgrade the whole family to business class from Hong Kong to LAX on Cathay Pacific. A wonderful experience but sadly my only brush with business class this year.
Biggest Travel Fail
The time I forgot to pack the kids swimwear for a beach holiday. I wasted half a day running around Koh Samui in Thailand to try to find decent swimsuits for them.
Favourite destination of 2014
We’ve had some amazing trips this year from Koh Samui and New Mexico to Phu Quoc and Chengdu. However, I think the winner has to be our visit to New Zealand’s North Island. The trip ticked all the boxes, from learning about Maori culture and attempting to fish for prawns to a sheep show at the Agrodome, Hawkes Bay wineries and viewing Auckland from the Sky Tower. If you’re looking for a family friendly road trip, make New Zealand top of your travel bucket list.
Hope you’ve enjoyed reading Jetlag & Mayhem over 2014. I love hearing all your questions, comments, tips and advice so please do keep in touch!
