Hyatt Regency, Hua Hin – Thailand

If you want a beach resort but can’t face more than one flight, you might want to consider Hua Hin, Thailand. Hailed as Thailand’s Royal Beach Resort (très posh), hit the dry season Dec – April and avoid the monsoons Sep – Nov.  From Bangkok, Hua Hin can be anywhere from a 2 to 4 hour drive depending on traffic and departure point.

Here is Sarah’s review of the luxurious Hyatt Regency, Hua Hin:

Hyatt Regency Hua Hin

Who: Family of five – us and my in-laws and our wee boy
When: 26th March – 8th April 2013 (weather was absolutely perfect.  The best holiday weather we’ve had for a couple of years.  Every day perfect sunshine, no rain, not too humid – wonderful!  Made us plan our next year’s Easter holiday already!

We flew Air Asia to Bangkok and arranged the hotel transfer as we wanted a car seat.  Chose Air Asia as Easter flights with Cathay were so expensive and only 30 mins longer!  Drive took nearly 4 hours both ways as we flew in and out of the old airport!  All booked separately.

Hotel Booking
We use Lightfoot Travel for all our holidays however we used Agoda for this hotel (ed note – if you’re thinking of using Lightoot who are fabulous, please tell them Jetlag & Mayhem sent you!)

The Room
We stayed in the Regency Club Wing.  I believe it has just been refurbished so it was all looking very good.  We had two rooms on the first floor overlooking the pool and club lounge area.  Spacious with no balcony – next time I would request a ground floor room as you get the extra inside seating bit, balcony and can walk onto grass by pool (no worries on security at all)

There was a large travel cot with Johnson’s baby stuff provided.  Soap, shower gel, talc.  Requested extra bottom mattress as quite hard – given without question and much better after this.

Kids Club
We didn’t use this as he was too small.

Ate in all the restaurants once which tells you they were nothing special.  McFarland House – ok, Thai Western style tapas.  Figs Italian – very good food but no atmosphere as it was empty.  Talay Thai – again very good food but empty and also no atmosphere.  You & Mee poolside great for lunch though, did this every day.

Regarding the kids food, we did actually mention this to the staff while we were there.  We stayed for 10 days and every day bar none we were given hard vegetables when ordered soft-boiled.  Broccoli had bugs in it which I only found on day 2!  Very greasy sautéed potatoes when requested anything but mash or chips.  Asked for baked potato one day and they baked a whole potato which took an hour!  Asked why it was taking so long and they just kept saying ‘it’s coming’.  The Kids food menu is a bit unhealthy and lacked freshly cooked options.  All chips, pizza, hotdogs.  The nuggets were real breast and nicely done.  Portion sizes were crazy when they could clearly see the size of our baby!

All excellent.  Gym modern, clean and all working.  The pools are brilliant for kids, a huge slide and sandy are which was super for our wee man!

Hyatt Regency Hua Hin 2

The beach was beautiful but there were jellyfish all over the place.  There were voluntary policemen riding horses up and down the beach offering horse rides.

Things to do
We visited the market just outside the hotel which is held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.  It is arty and different from every other night market in town.

There are two excellent restaurants near the hotel; Suprata – delicious Thai food, relaxed atmosphere and Let’s Sea – gorgeous boutique hotel with restaurant.  Excellent food, great service.  Lots of good ones in town, Chao Lay is the best.

There is a new winery we heard lots about and would have gone had it been poor weather but didn’t make it as glorious weather!

In Conclusion!
We go on holiday every three months or so and usually have some complaint!  This time we had none apart from the kids food which was a first.  Maybe having my mother in law there stopped me slightly!  We would definitely go back and met lots of returnees.
