2019 Travel Bucket List

I was browsing some old New Zealand photos from our incredible 2017 trip, plotting ways to return back to this majestic country.  Although we have covered much of the South Island, there’s still a fair few roads for us to travel on the North Island. Therefore it’s grabbing top spot on my 2019 travel bucket list!  Unusually for me, I have zero trips planned for next year. This is largely down to the fact we squeezed in a few extra trips this year as my husband changed jobs and we have overspent!  That won’t stop me from putting together my 2019 travel bucket list and dreaming. Perhaps you can visit some of these destinations and tell me how they are?

Bucket List Trips

New Zealand – Auckland to Bay Of Islands & Coromandel Peninsula

In 2014 we drove from Wellington to Auckland, taking in Napier, Taupo and Rotorua enroute. I’d love to explore the beauty north of Auckland, the Bay of Islands and Coromandel Peninsula.  I stumbled across this itinerary, which covers the route in 7 days.  I love traveling in New Zealand as the scenery is spectacular, coffee amazing and the people are super friendly.  If it wasn’t so far from my hometown of London, I would seriously consider relocating!

Borobudur, Indonesia

This Indonesian temple complex has been on my bucket list for quite some time. Now I live in Singapore, it is even closer but I still haven’t made the 2 hour flight just yet…  If money was no object, I’d stay at the Amanjiwo.  I haven’t returned to an Aman since my 10 year wedding anniversary trip to the Amanpulo but I’m determined to become an Amanjunkie!  That said, I’ll be traveling with little Misses Jetlag & Mayhem and therefore I really need more of a budget family option.  Honeykids has a great roundup of things to do in Yogyakarta and Borobudur.

Lombok, Indonesia

Seems Indonesia is featuring quite highly on the 2019 bucket list!  Lombok is another easy-ish minibreak from Singapore, with a flying time at just under 3 hours.  Lombok suffered from two strong earthquakes earlier this year.  Tourism in the area has been greatly affected and I think it’s important we keep spending those tourist dollars.  Little Steps has a handy guide – I’ve heard great things about The Oberoi and the villas at Selong Selo.

Hawaii Roadtrip – O‘ahu, Maui, the Big Island, and Kaua‘i

My friend Vicky has just returned form a 40th birthday trip to Kauai.  I asked her if it was like being on the set of ’50 First Dates’ and she said pretty much! As you may know, we try to do a US roadtrip each year but have yet to consider the state of Hawaii. Which is strange considering it’s much closer to me in Singapore than the rest of continental USA.  Family Travel has a list of Hawaii roadtrips that look promising. I had no idea Hawaii was so big and that you had to fly between the islands!

Luang Prabang, Laos

I visited Luang Prabang twenty years ago and would love to return with Jetlag & Mayhem.  Mum On The Move has a fab article on things to do in Luang Prabang with kids.  I too have an old article from my friend Bhupi who visited in 2014.  Sadly I don’t think my old backpacker haunts will muster enthusiasm from Mr Jetlag.  I think he’d prefer the look of Belmond La Residence Phou Vao…  The one thing putting me off a short weekend break is the lack of direct flights from Singapore.  Although as this is just a bucket list, I guess there’s no problem!

Hope you found inspiration from my short list above.  Please do let me know where’s on the top of your travel bucket list. I am also reading an excellent book that I received for my birthday, ‘1,000 Places To See Before You Die’.  The author Patricia Schultz writes, ‘The world is calling.  Time to answer’. I am full onboard with that sentiment.

Borobudur in Jogjakarta is really worth a visit, and yeah, since you’re living in Singapore, the Air Asia flights are super cheap. There are more boutique hotels opening up in Luang Prabang, but I’ve been informed that accommodation in LP are getting pricey now. Regardless, LP is another good place to travel to without spending a lot in terms of flight and food.

You put together quite a list! It’s so fun reading people’s travel plans and being inspired. We are looking at Hawaii maybe, as Southwest is planning to start flying there in 2019 and we have miles. Top of my 2019 bucket list is returning to Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. I’m a history nerd!
